 |
The whole school took part in the Sport relief Mile on the last day of term. Many pupils and teachers were sponsored to walk or run the mile round the school playground and we managed to raise a massive £1,252.50. The families and individuals who raised the most sponsorship were each given a prize.
They were:
Percy, Tiffany, Henry, Jack, George & Daisy Vickers, Ashley & Josh McNamara, Ellie & Chloe Bradbury, Jessica Leite and Kirstin Wilkinson.
Everybody had a really fun day. Thanks to Kathryn and Mrs Jackson for all their hard work organising it and thanks to everyone in school for making the effort to run! |

| Visiting Authors |
We have been very lucky in school as we have been visited by the author Pippa Goodhart. She has worked with different classes and talked to them about her life, how she gets her ideas and how she writes her books.
We are also due to be visited by another author Rose Impey, on May 19th, so the children will get another chance to learn about a real author's life and work. |

| Reading Together Club |
As part of our drive to improve reading, the library will be opened on Monday afternoons for our brand new READING TOGETHER CLUB. The first session was on Monday 19th April from 3.10 to 4pm.
During the sessions, children will be able to bring an adult to spend some quality time reading with them in a quiet and relaxed atmosphere. Help from trained adults will be available to advise on any reading issues and answer any questions.
CLUB MEMBERSHIP is free. Each visit will be rewarded with a small incentive and will count towards an end of term prize.
The first session was a good start with lots of children of different ages. The second session was even better, with 17 parents and 29 children!
We're hoping that you will all spread the word so that even more people join the club from next Monday.
Here are some photos of the people who came along on 26th April.
Hope to see you all there next week!

A few lucky pupils came into school during the Easter holidays on 29th, 30th & 31st March. They had some extra Numeracy and Literacy lessons but also did some cooking each day. They learnt to cook curry, stir fry and pizza, and then ate them for their lunch. It was a great success and we will definitely being offering something similar in the summer holidays.

| National Ten Thousand Trees Project |
|
We applied to take part in this year's phase of the 10,000 trees initiative!
Ten thousand trees is an exciting and ambitious project being run between Leicester City Council and Groundwork over three years. The project is hoping to result in 10, 000 trees being planted across the city between now and spring 2011.
Schools have a vital part to play in this ambitious project. each year a selection of schools are being given the free opportunity to get parents and children involved in planting trees in their school grounds, with the support of a Groundwork staff member.
Not only trees make school grounds nicer places to be, they also attract wildlife and absorb CO2 from the atmosphere, helping to tackle climate change. All this means this is a great opportunity to improve our school, city and global environment.
|
|
Planting trees is a great experience for children and adults and will impact positivley on the environment and everyone in Leicester.
We selected 60 trees to plant around our allotment area to develop a spinney and use it a s apart of our learning environment.
Children and adults helped to do the planting on the 21st of January. Everyone worked very hard, digging the holes and planting the new trees.
We planted different species of trees which included: Alder, Holly, Rowan, Silver Birch, Wild Service Tree, Mulberry Oak and Cherry.
We had a lovley time! |
| Pupils Interview Local Councillor |
 |
|
Year 5 pupils, Millie Barton and Roani Northern have had their interview with Councillor Vi Dempster printed in The Leicester Mercury's supplement newspaper for young people!
The Wave is a new initiative to involve young people in the world around them and encourages them to speak up and change things in the community that they are unhappy about.
On Monday 8th February Tina Barton came in to ask pupils to fill in a questionnaire about their local area and Councillor Vi Dempster will be visiting school to answer questions from pupils in the near future.
We look forward to our pupils making a great difference!

Once again Mrs Jackson had an inspired fund raising idea for the pupils of Braunstone Community Primary School. This time we all made contributions to wear hats in school, to raise money for the earthquake victims of Haiti.
Thursday's assembly certainly was a colourful affair, with many home made or home improved hats and all the staff joined in too.
Many thanks for all the generous contributions and also to Mrs Jackson and Mrs Davies for all their hard work organising the day. |

| This Year's First Golden Book Winners! |
 |
|
Alex and Riley are the prestigious winners of this year's first Golden Book prizes.
Pupils can receive 'special stickers' for outstanding work or behaviour. These stickers are collected in a folder, with an acknowledgement in assembly for every fifth sticker. Any pupil who works hard enough to achieve 25 stickers is rewarded with a book of their choice and a well deserved round of applause in Friday's assembly.
These stickers are not given out liberally and it can take pupils the whole year to collect 25, so we are particularly proud of Alex and Riley for having achieved so much in only one term! |
| Well done, and keep up the good work! |

| Special Assemblies |

Class 9 had their special assembly on Friday 11th June. It was all about South Africa. They told us lots of interesting facts about South Africa and showed us lots of pictures of the animals that are there and also the stadiums that the World Cup will be held in. They sang the national anthem for us and also treated us to two South African dances. They showed us the beautiful animal art work that they have been doing with Kirsty Whitrow and finished off with the whole class dancing together! |

Class 6 had their special assembly on Friday 25th June. It began with a magic carpet ride which took us through lots of places in Saudi Arabia, using photos and narration. Next we were given a lot of very interesting information that the children had all remembered off by heart. We were treated to a fantastic camel judging competition, which camel number 2 won, due to her fantastic extending neck!
The assembly ended up with the whole of class 6 dancing to some Saudi Ararbian music.
I hope you enjoy the photos as much as we enjoyed the assembly! |

| Staff Leaving |
This year we have said goodbye to a record number of teachers, as well as our extremely successful and popular Year 6 pupils.
Mrs Bassford has left to enjoy a (hopefully) relaxed retirement. We're hoping she spends a lot of time in her garden and drinking tea. Mrs Everley will be teacing in nearby Ratby but hopes to be moving further afield in the next few years. Miss Patel is off, with her best friend, to travel the world. We're looking forward to plenty of interesting postcards. Miss Sutton has a new job in London, so has an exciting move ahead. Vickie is not leaving us but is going to Scotland to get married this summer! Congratulations to you all! We wish you all the best!
Thanks to Billie Gamble-Andrews for the fantastic cakes! |

Pupils who earn 25 stickers in the class Golden Book are given a reading book of their choice as a prize. It can take a whole year to earn enough stickers, so we were all very pleased that so many pupils managed it. Here are the ones who received their books on the last day of term.
Also each year a trophy is given to one boy and one girl to acknowledge commitment to sport. They dont have to be the best at sport but to have the best attitude to joining teams and clubs. This year's ver deserving winners were Remmie & Tapiwa from Class 13. Well done all of you! |

| Year 6 Leaving |
 |
This year's Year 6 have been stars in so many ways. Their sporting achievments have been amazing and this can be attributed to their determination to succeed and the many hours of hard work that they put into practicing playing as a team together.
As a year group, we have also been very pleased with their SATs results. They have all worked really hard with Mrs Weich, Mrs Black & Mrs Tuffey, with Miss Purkiss also taking small groups for focussed booster sessions. All the staff have put in an inordinate amount of effort to help these pupils to achieve their best possible results.
We wish them all every success in their various secondary schools and hope that they will come back to visit us and let us kow how they are getting on.
This year's year 6 have also been extremely successful in their swimming classes, with many of them achieving 6 and 7 stars and some having learnt to swim in a few weeks. Well done! |

| Talent Show |
This year's talent show was an absolute treat, with an incredible range ofages taking part and all demonstrating wonderful skills in singing, dancing and general performance.
Each pupil and teacher in the school watched the performances and than voted on their favourite. It was a very difficult choice as they were all incredibly brave and performed brilliantly.
The winners were a group of boys from Year 6, performing a very skillful street-style dance to Tinie Tempah's song, Pass Out . They had obviously worked out their strengths andpracticed a lot together. They were very entertaining.
Second place went to a stunning acapela duet of Beyoncé's Sweet Dream, by Chelsea & Tafadzwa from year 5. Their voices were both strong and they sang amazingly well.
The third place went to from Sadie i Foundation, who gave us a wonderful gymnastics display to music. She was very confident and performed brilliantly in front of the whole school!
Well done to all of you! |
